I agree this will Kill the businesses and people will just stay in Nagshead i know i will next year! The business owners will be run in the ground within 3 years. The people that rented this year like myself and didnt know will be irate and wont return but i will be sure to pass the word so anyone that doesnt know will not make the mistake we did.

There are alot a small businesses we realy liked i truly feel for these hard working people they will fall victim to STUPID Politics and GREED!!!!!!

In a time where the economy is bad and people have it hard enough time affording a vacation. They expect someone to pay 50 dollars to drive on the beach this is so sad this is nothing but a way to stop people from doing it altogether. We have already rented a house so we are stuck but this will be the last time we go to hatteras. I would just rather stay in nagshead where there are convenient beach access. I truely feel sorry for the businesses in Hatteras because this will end up hurting them in the long run because people will just stop coming to Hatteras! I know i will.

I've been to Hatteras a few times now and absolutely loved it! The privacy and relaxation was a much needed vacation. I am currently looking into getting Cape Cod vacation rentals but after that, I can really see us getting some property down in Hatteras too.

I have insurance but it won't matter cause the money-grubbers have "opened" most of the island to visitors. Wonderful. I get to add 4+ hours to my trip ferry-hopping only to get to a rental that surely is in disrepair or dirty. Then I have to fight DESERVING locals (who understandably don't want me there) for food, gas and essentials.

All interested parties need to re-examine their priorities there. You might save some of this year's rental $ but you will pay for it in future years because a lot of people will never return.

Totally unfair situation for those of us who purchased trip insurance but won't be able to get ferry reservations because everyone else will be trying to get them as well. What happens if, God forbid, there's another evacuation order because another storm's on its way? How does Dare County expect to evacuate the island using the two ferry systems? This is the WORST possible solution. It's NO solution AT ALL and we feel like we've been screwed out of our hard-earned money.

If trip insurance was not purchased and I have booked and paid for the week of 9/17 to 9/24 in Avon, what are my options? There are also the ferries to Ocracoke and then the ferry from Ocracoke to Hatteras--which I am willing to take to get there. If the island remains closed to visitors after 9/17 is it possible to 1) receive a refund, or 2) book an alternate week in October or November? Please address this concern as I am sure I am not the only renter in this unfortuante situation. Thank you.

I have been checking all sites from DARE CO to the NC DOT. They all say the same thing. No one knows but, they anticipate the road will not be repaired for over 2 months. In fact, if you go to this site http://outerbanksvoice.com/2011/08/30/dredge-fill-temporary-spans-among-n-c-12-options/ you will see they are talking about 5 - 6 months. They also mention that the Bonner Bridge has 18,000 vehicles crossing each day. The ferry can carry 35 - 40 vehicles. If the ferry could hold 40 vehicles on each trip that would be 450 crossings a day! 450 crossings at 2.5 hours each = 1125 hours or 46 days?

Also, if a ferry is in place I understand it takes 2 1/2 hours to get from Stumpy Point to Rodanthe? Once we are there will we be able to purchase food, gas, and other essentials? Will the cost for them be so high we won't be able to buy them? Is the electric going to be on, will we have cable, phones, and all of the amenities of our house?

I'd really like to follow the advice of the owner and book a house in the North to be sure our vacation will still be in place.I can not do so without proper documentation from your office to complete the claim against the travel insurance. I have been emailing and calling and have not got a definitive answer.
I won't stop supporting the Outer Banks. I love it there. Please respond to my emails by allowing me to file an insurance claim.

First off, thank you Abby for staying in Avon during the eye of Irene. Your videos and updates were awesome. We are all happy that you safe and that the worst of the storm is over. Currently, my family is here with me in Raleigh and we are awaiting an update concerning the readiness of Avon. It appears HY12 requires considerable repair as seen by the recent pictures on the internet. Could you please given us a reasonable estimate when HY 12, the vacation homes, beach access points, and surround roads will be accessible? My parents are in a hotel and we are "vacationing" in Raleigh. It is unfair to keep us all in limbo. Please give us an update on the reality of our vacation home, beach access points, and local road being ready by Tuesday for our scheduled return. Thank you.
