Travel Advisory- NC 12 & Ferry Information

Emergency Ferry Service and 4WD AccessPriority Boarding for Hatteras Island ResidentsBeginning Monday, November 5, 2012, priority boarding will be given to Hatteras Island residents traveling weekdays on the Emergency Ferry Service between Stumpy Point and Rodanthe. Priority boarding for residents will be done Monday through Friday and requires a driver’s license with a Hatteras Island address. The weekday priority will be given to residents boarding on either side of the emergency ferry route behind vehicles with essential commodities, recovery supplies, and those with medical priorities, as determined by Dare County Emergency Management and NCDOT. Travel Advisory- NCDOT to Open Hwy 12 to 4WD

RALEIGH — N.C. Department of Transportation crews spent today surveying the impacts of the Nor’easter on parts of N.C. 12 already damaged by Hurricane Sandy. Although the Nor’easter has moved north of the North Carolina coast, rough seas continue to affect the Outer Banks, especially during high tide.

In Kitty Hawk, there is overwash on N.C. 12, which is locally known as the beach road. That is not stopping crews from continuing to move and place sand along the ocean side of the highway to rebuild the dune that was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. They are also removing pavement damaged during both storms from the roadway.

On Pea Island, the Nor’easter did not hamper progress to repair the tension cables on the deck of the Bonner Bridge, but it has washed sand and water onto N.C. 12 at the temporary bridge. As the water recedes, crews will continue their work to rebuild the highway approaching the bridge. The Mirlo Beach area is also seeing flooding and overwash on N.C. 12. Crews with Barn…

Beginning on Friday, November 2, 2012 all reentry restrictions for Hatteras Island will be lifted and ferry service will be available for everyone, including visitors. The following schedule will remain in place through Friday, November 2, 2012 for the Stumpy Point/Rodanthe Ferry Service. Travel Advisory- Expanded Ferry Service

Expanded Emergency Ferry Service Begins Saturday

Beginning Friday, November 2 at 6:00 a.m. all reentry restrictions for Hatteras Island will be lifted and ferry service will be available for everyone, including visitors.  The only access to Hatteras Island is by ferry until further notice. The only priority given for emergency ferry service is for essential commodities and materials, as determined by Dare County Emergency Management and the Ferry Division.
The following ferry schedule will remain in placethrough Friday, November 2.  Emergency Ferry Service– Stumpy Point to Rodanthe Departing Stumpy Point at 6 a.m., 8, 10, noon, 2 p.m., 4 and 10; andDeparting Rodanthe at 7 a.m., 9, 11, 1 p.m., 3, 5 and 7. Hatteras-Ocracoke Schedule– Departing Hatteras at 6 a.m., 8, 10, noon, 2 p.m., 4, 6, 8, 10 and midnight; andDeparting Ocracoke at 5 a.m., 7, 9, 11, 1 p.m., 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11.For those utilizing the Ocracoke ferry route, keep in mind that travel from Cedar Islan…
