After the Storm Update 9.7.11

Ferry Schedule Expands to Support Recovery Efforts

The Ferry Division of NCDOT is doing everything possible to support the re-entry effort to Hatteras Island. They have expanded the number of available ferry trips each day between Stumpy Point and Rodanthe in order to help more residents return to their homes.

The Ferry Division has increased the number of daily trips from12 to 16, which provides 24 hour coverage. This has been done to accommodate the greatest number of returning residents and critical personnel, and to facilitate the flow of essential commodities such as food and fuel.

Returning residents should be aware that even with the additional ferry trips, delays and long lines are possible. Everyone is asked to please be patient during the re-entry process. Your cooperation and courtesy is appreciated and will assist the Ferry Division in accomplishing its mission.

Residents should also be aware that technical problems can arise, without notice, that could delay or interrupt ferry service. These include the potential for mechanical breakdowns and unforeseen repairs that can occur with an expanded 24 hour operation. Delays may also be caused by navigational issues and load restriction limits that are associated with a shallow channel that is not typically used for ferry service.

Between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 4:30 a.m., the Ferry Division will give boarding priority to vehicles carrying essential commodities. Commercial vehicles are urged to use the overnight ferry trips in order to avoid congestion with the re-entry of residents.

Dare County Emergency Management appreciates the tireless work being done by the Ferry Division of NCDOT and encourages the public to be patient with their efforts assisting the people of Hatteras Island during the post-storm recovery process.
