We all know what comes to mind when we think vacation days at the beach…BBQ! Unfortunately, hot dog and hamburger season coincides with bathing suit season. A summer full of fun feasts can start adding some numbers to the scale. This is not to say that we should avoid BBQ for fear of weight gain, but we should make right choices and substitute healthier recipes when we can.
The easiest way to ensure there is one healthy food you’ll enjoy, and feel good about eating, is to volunteer to bring a dish! Bring a tray of shish-kabobs loaded with tasty vegetables, or a quinoa salad is a terrific side dish that blends well with a BBQ. Another good tip is to skip the empty carbs. When reaching for the hamburger buns try to grab whole wheat or whole grain buns. They might be a little harder to find, but well worth the effort!
When it comes to alcohol, some choices are better than others. Pack a cooler of light beers, or try out a new mixed drink. Here is a quick recipe you can try for a Skinny Island Girl: 1 oz. of vodka, 1 oz. unsweetened cranberry juice, ¼ oz. fresh squeezed lime juice, Stevia syrup, Diet Ginger Ale. Add all ingredients to an ice filled glass, stir, and sip. This tangy vodka drink is only 78 calories!
Now let’s get to the real good stuff, desserts! Those delicious cookies, cake and ice cream shops are just calling your name. Believe me, no one is denying you those scrumptious treats, but the problem with eating them on a hot summer day is they tend to make us feel sluggish and dehydrated. Freezing fruit like grapes or blueberries create a refreshing treat with an impressive amount of vitamins. You could even impress some guests with homemade popsicles. Here is an easy one to try, Orange Creamsicle: 1 cup of freshly squeeze orange juice & 1 to 2 cups of vanilla soy milk. Simply squeeze oranges, mix with soy milk, pour into popsicle molds and freeze.
Remembering simple rules likes these during your grilling season will guarantee a good, guilt free time. Let’s make a toast to a vacation full of laughter, drinks, fun, and no regrets!
