If someone told me that working and vacationing at the same time actually works, I would not believe it. That is until last summer when I first got here. Tired from writing college papers and taking exams, after an exhausting 10 hour transatlantic flight, 3 plane changes and carrying all the baggage, I still remember the feeling when I first stepped out of the Norfolk Airport. The temperature was above 80 degrees – it rains a lot and it is cold in Lithuania, so this was something I really needed. This feeling was one of the many reasons why I came back to Hatteras Island again this summer.
Like a year ago, this summer work and vacation worked out pretty well for me. Though I work long hours in the office and am a little bit home-sick, I still feel like I am on vacation. My summer is no different than tourists’ that have to pay thousands just to come here and stay for a week or two. I spend my days off at the beach, climb the lighthouse, dine in local seafood restaurants, go to the movies, grill out, take pictures, go kayaking and canoeing, visit Jockey’s Ridge and the North Carolina Aquarium, go shopping for souvenirs for my friends and family, take a walk in Kinnakeet Shores neighborhood, grab ice-cream at Dairy Queen, ride a bike, go feed the turtles from the bridge, and, of course, get stuck in traffic on Saturdays and wait impatiently in line at the local Food Lion.
I still have one month left before I fly back to Lithuania and I feel like there are so many fun things left to do on this island. The time flies by here and I wish to slow it down a little bit. I gained a lot of work experience, learned how to live on my own, met a lot of friends, earned enough money to pay for my college, and enjoyed sun, wonderful weather and ocean waves. I did not know what to expect from these two summers, but I can surely say that I do not regret coming here at all, and this is not going to be my last summer here – maybe next time I will be one of the people waiting at the Hatteras Realty office to pick up the keys for my vacation home!
